Workshops

Aflatoxins Management

Saturday, August 16 08:30-17:00

Palais des congrès de Montréal

Registration fee: free of charge

The purpose of this pre-congress workshop is to inform food scientists worldwide within IUFoST, interested in Food Security, about the latest developments in AFLATOXIN prevention and reduction, and to discuss ways of implementing latest technologies.

As a partner in the Global Food Safety Partnership, facilitated by the World Bank, and following the success of the first pre-congress (one day) mycotoxin management workshop held in Brazil in 2012 (Mycotoxin Management Network), IUFoST is organizing a one-day pre-congress workshop that will be held in Montreal on August 16, 2014 focussing on aflatoxin prevention and reduction.

The agenda of the workshop has been developed to discuss prevalence, health impact (humans, farm animals), analytical techniques, and control/reduction methods related to aflatoxin contamination using the approach of food scientists and technologists in providing practical solutions answering the following questions: What is the problem? Where are the hotspots? What is the knowledge base in endangered areas? Are analytical methods available, accessible, affordable, and of practical use to characterize the level of contamination? What methods are available to reduce the aflatoxin load? To what extent/scale are the available methods applicable under the conditions of the hotspots in endangered areas (critical evaluation)? Deliverables include the discussion on a concrete proposal to be presented to a funding organization, and the identification of a champion, as well as to report back to the General Assembly (IUFoST) in Montreal.
